“To thine own self be true” is a known expression that means to stay true and honest with yourself. To not worry about pleasing others or living by society’s standards and rules but rather to live according to their own beliefs and morals. The untethered soul is about yourself and how to let go of painful memories that keep your heart closed, allowing you to free yourself from your own habitual thoughts and emotions that limit your consciousness. Michael A. Singer attempts to get his readers to see themselves from different angles and the ability to free themselves from the constant chatter of the psyche, allowing them to step back, refocus, and view these life experiences objectively.
This is my second time reading this book; I wanted to deepen my understanding of what this book is really all about. My first read was a few years ago, recommended by my hairdresser, hoping it would help me as it did for her. Being a bookworm, I was open to any recommendations, so I was eager to purchase and dive into the book at my earliest opportunity. I felt like I was freefalling, as if the author slowly opened the doors to a new way of living and how to remove the walls I built around myself. It was not until the second time reading this book that I understood that now my walls are down; how do I keep them from coming back up and living a life without resistance? First, I had to figure out who I was and live a life of honesty, to myself first and foremost. For me, living an honest life is a life of liberation and peace without any resistance, as resistance takes more energy than acceptance. The spiritual path of non-resistance is a hard path that takes years of self-discipline and perseverance. I struggle with this every day, hoping someday I get it right. Nevertheless, nothing worth having comes easy.
